Remote Management of Backup & Recovery to Dramatically Imporve with Zmanda Running on the 3G iPhone

Faster connection speeds and Amanda Enterprise´s easy-to-use web-based user interface to ease remote management of backup and recovery process via handheld device.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – July 9, 2008 – On Friday legions of early adopters will lineup outside of Apple retail stores around the country to buy the newest generation iPhone. This release represents Apple´s first major upgrade to the digital device that is now widely considered to be a vital computing platform.

The new iPhone is chock-full of new, zippy applications and will harness the speed of a 3G network that will enable downloads at near-broadband speeds. The ultra-fast 3G network will enable some corporate IT users to perform day-to-day network management tasks that were previously not possible using handheld devices. For example, DBAs or system administrators who are responsible for backup and recovery, can now perform these tasks using Amanda Enterprise and Zmanda Recovery Manager on an iPhone.

The iPhone will support secure, enterprise-class Internet communication by using tools such as IPSec VPN, VPN-1 and WPA2/802.11x. These robust security levels, along with the ability to create specific login credentials for individual users, is expected to drive corporate demand for the iPhone. Using the new iPhone on the 3G network will enable Zmanda customers to:

  • Activate enterprise-wide or MySQL backups anytime, anywhere
  • Perform point-and-click restores right from their iPhones
  • Receive up-to-the-minute backup reports via emails
  • Easily manage backup operations via a calendar view of monthly backups

“With Zmanda´s simple and secure Web management console, system and storage administrators can perform remote backup and recovery anytime and anywhere,” said Ann Ruckstuhl, vice president and chief technology evangelist, Zmanda. “Today´s introduction of the Apple 3G iPhone will make it much easier for system administrators to respond quickly to backup and recovery requests, even when they´re not near a computer.”
